The rose garden and petunias got a beating late Saturday; we had a strong wind, pea-sized hail, and 1 & 30/100ths rain within 20 minutes. However, Monte and I missed the excitement because we went shopping in Grand Island. We drove through light rain &

Gary, Ellis, Amelia and IĀ are surviving in Iowa as the flood waters recede. Currently we are housing some family friends who were evacuated due to flooding. The waters are not yet below flood level, and the University of Iowa Campus has been shut down for

My New Favorite Store

My New Favorite Store

I have to thank Leanne for sending me to Kohl’s back in April to buy a tablecloth, because that’s when I first discovered they have amazing clearance sales. I bought a $7 sweater that jumped out at me at the time, but couldn’t search for further bargains because Monte and I were on a mission to buy outfits for Paul’s funeral.

Finally, yesterday I had a chance to go there again, this time with Mom, who needed some new socks. Naturally I detoured us to the clearance racks first, and we ended up with 9 sweaters and turtlenecks between us (plus 9 pairs of socks) for about $37 total. Some of the turtlenecks were on sale for $1.60!! And the best part is, these are much better quality clothes than the cheap stuff I usually get at Wal-Mart. My only regret is I won’t be able to wear any of my purchases till fall. (Mom, on the other hand, wears her turtlenecks year-round.)

Monte and I plan to go there today to see what bargains he might be able to find. Kohls might actually make me enjoy clothes shopping. What a concept!

The southeast corner of the folks’ yard is now completed. Last month, Don, Leanne, Monte, and I extended the yard fabric and mulch to include the bottom part of the ditch and planted pink roses Dad had ordered. Monte and I then finished covering the

Dry Spots

Iowa may still be under water, but our basement is finally water-free, and the floor is actually getting dry spots for the first time in over 3 weeks! But more rain may be on the way this week.

It appears that the Coralville Reservoir crested early this morning, and the Iowa River is cresting now in Iowa City about 1.5 feet lower than predicted. However, water will continue to flow over the spillway through this week even without additional rains. Unlike the Cedar River in Cedar Rapids, which will likely be below flood stage in a few days, Iowa City and Coralville will experience flooding for an extended period. Dubuque Street, the main road from I-80 into downtown Iowa City, was under water for 3 months during the 1993 flood, and the water level is much higher this time.
