Closets Project: Master Bedroom Closet
October 2006
One thing bothered me about our Great Room Project: the closet hallway. This also corresponded with what bothered me about our previous Master Bedroom Project: the master closet. That is, we hadn’t included either in our refurbishing plans.
My disturbance in this matter finally reached a boiling point. And so, the very day the electrician showed up to wire the Great Room, I attacked the closets with a vengence. Never mind that they weren’t in our plans and we were on a deadline.*** These were just closets. Small rooms. How much work could they possibly be?
(***The California Mickleys–and Marcy & Tim–were coming for a visit over Thanksgiving, and since they were all staying at our house, we needed it to not be in the middle of deconstruction!)
Here was the northeast corner of the beautiful master bedroom closet. Two features have already been removed prior to this photo. First, a couple boards rested on the top row of hooks, creating a shelf. Second, an old plumbling pipe stretched across the closet for use as a hanger rod. One thing still in the photos but unable to see are the numerous plaster cracks. |

Monte had installed a sconce on the south wall back in 2001 when he and Dad rewired the master bedroom. Wired, but not yet hooked up to the electrical box, so we didn’t have light. The closet has a window on the west wall though, so this was only a problem at night.
The first thing I did was pull off all the boards with the hooks.
Some of the plaster came off, too. |

The builders of our house never anticipated future owners pulling off the woodwork, so they used footlong nails to attach it. Okay, not really footlong, but long enough. This is one reason we had slow-going taking all the woodwork off in the Great Room! I removed the baseboards on the north and east walls in the master closet, because my plan was to install shelving in the northeast corner. |

This is proof Monte helped me some with the Closets Project. I’d forgotten he did some of the patching. This may have been because I didn’t want to stand so high on the ladder. |
||
I think everyone should decorate with newspapers. It’s the new style. |
