Slush

Slush

I first had this icy, slushy drink in the 1980s, and it became a staple in our house. It’s a great New Year’s punch—as well as a cooling drink on hot summer nights!

I hadn’t made it in years. When I bought the frozen juices last week, I had to hold Gem off from mixing them the regular way. She was skeptical about Slush, but she was hooked the minute she tried it, just as I was all those years ago.

I confess I’ve never had the vodka version, so can’t attest to whether it’s good or not. 😄

Ingredients

  • 9 cups water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 12 oz can frozen orange juice
  • 1 12 oz can frozen lemonade
  • 1 liter lemon-lime soda or 2 cups Vodka

Directions

  • In a large kettle, boil the water and sugar until the sugar is dissolved.
  • Stir in frozen juices until melted. Let cool.
  • Pour into freezer-safe container with a lid. Freeze several hours until it's partially frozen (slushy). If it gets frozen solid, let thaw until it's slushy.
  • Pour slush into a large punch bowl and add the lemon-lime soda. (Equal parts slush and soda; if using all the slush, use the entire bottle of soda.) Or scoop slush into cups, filling partway, and pouring in an equal amount of soda. Serve immediately.
  • For an alcohol version, mix 2 cups vodka into the entire batch of slush. Serve immediately.
